When Jake suggests that they take in a lodger to help pay their mortgage, Marisa agrees thinking that “it will alleviate the pressure on Jake and that, as a result, he will be more present with her. If it all seems to be happening a little quickly, which Marisa’s friend Jas suggests, Marisa claims that “when you know, you just know.” But, as it turns out, there are things that Marisa does not know. Marisa moves in with Jake, and they make plans to have a family. He had looks you could imagine aging well and at the same time you could see instantly what sort of child he had been. His face was uncomplicated: A defined chin and boyish cheeks. Marisa hasn’t always been lucky in love until she meets Jake. (Oh, who am I kidding? I don’t need anyone’s recommendation to buy more books I just buy them.) One of my favourite Booktubers, Jack Edwards, loved Elizabeth Day’s novel Magpie, and it was already on my TBR list anyway, so with his added endorsement, I picked it up.

In All Systems Red, they were helping humans stay alive on a distant, mostly uncharted planet. Occasionally though, partly as they need to work, and partly as they need to disguise themselves as a real Security Unit / augmented human, they find themselves helping out humans with their problems and despite being an entirely independent (rogue) Murderbot, spend very little time with the wholesale killing and murder spree thing. They are a deeply introverted security unit with some organic parts to complement the mechanical, and who much prefer watching the fictional lives of soap opera characters than having to interact with real humans. To recap, the series is all about an AI named "Murderbot", who has slipped free of their control chip and likes to spend free time watching soap operas. It didn't fit him-a lot like the Prada outfit he wore at the Oscars. So I feel like, in that respect, he was (like so many stars) temperamentally unsuited to being famous. But he was introverted and shy, reluctant to trumpet his talents, self-doubting, self-diminishing. He wasn't this sort of goal-less person with zero aspiration, zero achievement motive. I think people sometimes present his attitude that way, but it's not accurate, at least not entirely. It's not like what he envisioned was total obscurity. He worked incredibly hard, and he didn't do that for no reason at all. He wanted to hear his songs on the radio. Ruth, Isabel, Curzon and Aberdeen (a friend and companion of Ruth’s) begin the trip back north toward freedom, but this journey, in the middle of the Revolution and veering directly into the center of the Battle of Yorktown, is not simple for anyone. Ruth is scared and angry, plagued by seizures and distrustful of Isabel. Finding Ruth, however, may not give Isabel the family she imagines. Isabel is heading back south with Curzon to find Ruth, her sister who was taken from her as an infant and sold. Ashes, the thrilling and long-awaited conclusion to Laurie Halse Anderson’s award-winning Seeds of America trilogy, continues the story of Isabel and Curzon, who have been thrust into the middle of the American Revolution. As one hopeful event occurs, painful ones follow. Isabel’s life is filled with contradictions. War, death, slavery patience, freedom, dreams.
